WASHINGTON \u2014 President-elect Joe Biden accused the Trump administration of continuing to obstruct the transition process, warning that a fumbled handoff could leave an opening for America\u2019s adversaries to exploit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biden called out the political leadership at the Department of Defense for preventing his team from getting an adequate picture of the military\u2019s operations and posture around the world. He also said his team wasn\u2019t getting enough insight into the government\u2019s budget planning currently underway that he will inherit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve encountered roadblocks with the political leadership at the Department of Defense and the Office of Management and Budget,\u201d Biden said during a speech on Monday in Wilmington, Delaware. \u201cRight now we just aren\u2019t getting all the information that we need from the outgoing administration in key national security areas. It is nothing short, in my view, of irresponsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transition team officials have been raising concerns about the Department of Defense for weeks, though Monday’s remarks were Biden’s most forceful on the issue. Kash Patel, a\u00a0Trump loyalist\u00a0who was recently appointed as Pentagon chief of staff, has been controlling the Biden transition’s team access to\u00a0Pentagon\u00a0officials, NBC News\u00a0reported\u00a0earlier this month. A Biden transition official told reporters on Dec. 18 that the Defense Department had abruptly halted meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following Biden’s remarks, acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller in a statement denied the department was stonewalling the Biden team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our DOD political and career officials have been working with the utmost professionalism to support transition activities in a compressed time schedule and they will continue to do so in a transparent and collegial manner that upholds the finest traditions of the Department,” Miller said. “The American people expect nothing less and that is what I remain committed to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Miller has previously disputed that the department had stopped cooperating saying that it was taking a “pause” from meetings for two weeks around the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
