Australia to hand Timor billions in gas revenue to counter Beijing

Australia will donate at least a third of the revenue it would receive from the Greater Sunrise gas development to Timor-Leste as part of a new partnership with the South-East Asian nation, as the government looks to counter China’s influence in the region.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement alongside his Timor-Leste counterpart Xanana Gusmao as the pair signed a joint declaration committing to further economic, defence and cultural ties.
