
Tokyo | The sudden purge of China’s most senior generals has sparked huge upheaval in the People’s Liberation Army, scrambled Beijing’s military planning and likely reduced the near-term risk of a major operation against Taiwan.
Beijing announced at the weekend that China’s most powerful uniformed officer, Zhang Youxia, was being removed for “serious disciplinary violations”, while a second member of the all-powerful Central Military Commission, General Liu Zhenli, was being investigated.
